The goal is seamless communication anywhere in the world. The word “Internet” is derived from the prefix “Inter” (between) and “net” (network). Originally, it referred only to one of the networks, but over time the name evolved to describe the entire network. The first vision of a network similar to today’s Internet dates back to 1946. In 1958, the ARPA agency was founded, leading to the launch of ARPANET on October 29, 1969, which consisted of four nodes and connected university computers across the United States. The number of users and connected computers has grown exponentially, and today it connects the entire world. The internet began to appear in the Czech Republic in 1990, when only landlines existed here. The technology gradually improved. Attempts to connect to the Internet took place in November 1991. Today, you would be hard-pressed to find a computer in the country that cannot connect to the global network—the Internet. In the 1990s, however, this was more of an exception. The Internet offers us many ways to use it. Perhaps the most widely used feature is the system of websites, which are displayed using a web browser. They use the HTTP or HTTPS protocol. Many Internet users limit themselves to this option alone, even though the Internet offers us much more. Another very popular feature is electronic mail, or email. In recent years, email has been increasingly replaced by instant messaging—real-time online communication between users. Using the Internet, you can make phone calls, share files, photos, and videos, connect to a remote computer, or even play online games. The Internet now covers almost the entire world. There are very few places where it is impossible to connect to the Internet, and we can hardly even imagine life without it today. The Internet has become a part of our lives and is difficult to replace.
